MP2009-ultra l o w noise, low dropout,120 ma linear regulator MP2009 rev. 1. 2 www.monolithicpower.com 11 12/18/2013 mps proprietar y information. pate nt protec ted. un authorized photo c op y and d uplication prohibited. ? 2013 mps. all rights reserved. operation the mp200 9 is an ultra low noise, low dropou t, low-quiesce nt current linear regula t or designe d for space-re stricted applications. it is intended f o r use in devices that requires very low voltage, low quiescent current such as wireless lan, battery- powered equipment and hand-held e quipment. internal p-channel pass transistor the mp20 09 features a 1.4 ? p-channel mosfet a s the pass transistor. it provide s several advantages over similar designs usin g pnp pass transistor. the p-chan nel mosfe t requires no base drive, which reduces quie scen t current considerably and increase th e battery life . pnp-based regulators waste consider able current in dropout when the pass transisto r saturates. t hey also u s e high base - drive current under the la rge load con dition. the MP2009 do es not suffer f r om these problems and consume only 50a of quiescen t current in light load an d dropout mode. dropout vo ltage dropout volt age is the minimu m input to output differential voltage required for th e regulator to maintain an output volt age within 100mv of it s nominal value. it deter mines the available end -of- life battery voltage in battery-powered systems. for the p-channel mosfet pass element, the dropout voltage is a fun c tion of dra i n to source on resistance . because the p-chan nel mosf et pass eleme n t behaves as a low-value resisto r , the dropout voltage of MP2009 is very low. shutdow n the mp200 9 can be switched on or off by a logic input at the en p i n. a high voltage at this pin will turn the device on. when the en pin is low, the reg u lator output is off. the en pin shou ld be tied to vi n to keep th e regulator output alwa ys on if the applicat io n does no t require t he shutdown feature. do not float the e n pin. current li mit and thermal prote c tion the MP2009 includes an indepen dent curren t limit structur e which monitors and controls the p- channel mosfet?s gate voltage to limit t he guaranteed maxi mum o u tput curren t to 120ma. thermal protection tu rns off th e p-chann el mosfet when the junction temperature exceeds +150oc, allowing the i c to cool. when the i c ?s junction temperature dr ops by 20o c, the pmos will be turne d on again. thermal protection l i mits total power dissipation in the m p 2009. for reliable ope ration, junct i on temperature should be limited to 125 oc maximum.
MP2009-ultra l o w noise, low dropout,120 ma linear regulator MP2009 rev. 1. 2 www.monolithicpower.com 12 12/18/2013 mps proprietar y information. pate nt protec ted. un authorized photo c op y and d uplication prohibited. ? 2013 mps. all rights reserved. appli c ation information pow e r diss ipation the power dissipat ion f o r any package depend s on the thermal resistan ce of the ca se and circu i t board, the temperature difference between the junction and ambient air, and the ra te of airflow . the power dissipat ion across the device can be represented by the equation: p = (v in - v out ) i out the allowable power dissipation can be calculated u s ing the following equation: p (max ) = (t ju nc t i on - t ambien t ) / ja where (t ju ncti on - t amb i ent ) is t h e temperature difference between the junctio n and th e surrounding environment, ja is the ther ma l resistance from the junction to the ambient environment . connecting the gnd pin o f MP2009 to ground with a large ground plane will help the cha nnel heat a w ay. output noi se and psrr for the MP2009, an internal 50pf bypass capacitor with new innovative structure reduces output noise s greatly. it does not ne ed external bypass cap a citor for space-limitin g applicatio ns. the power supply rejection is 75db at 10khz an d 55db at 100khz. (see the psrr vs. frequency graph in the typical performanc e characterist ics). input capacitor selection use a 1f c apacitor on the input of the MP2009 . larger values will help to improve line transie nt response with the drawback of increased size . cera mic ca pacitors are preferred, but tantalu m capacitors ma y also suffice. output cap acitor selection the mp200 9 is designe d specifica l ly to work wi th very low esr ceramic o u tput capacitor in space - limiting and performan ce consider ation. output capacitor of larger values will help to improve load transie nt response and reduce noise wit h the drawback of increa sed size. a 1f ceramic capacitor with esr lower than 3 ? is sufficient f o r the MP2009 application circuit. (see the region of stable c out esr vs. load current graph in t h e typical performance ch aracteristics)
MP2009-ultra l o w noise, low dropout,120 ma linear regulator MP2009 rev. 1. 2 www.monolithicpower.com 13 12/18/2013 mps proprietar y information. pate nt protec ted. un authorized photo c op y and d uplication prohibited. ? 2013 mps. all rights reserved. pcb layo ut g u ide pcb layout is very important to achieve good regulation, ripple rejection, transient response and thermal perfo rmance. i t is highly recommend ed to duplicate evb layout for optimum performance. if change is ne cessar y , please f o llow these guidelines a nd take figur e 2 for reference. 1) input and ou tput bypass ceramic cap a citors are suggest ed to be put close to the in pin and out pi n respective ly. 2) ensure all f eedback co nnections a r e short and direct. place the fe edback re sistors and compensation components as clo s e to the chip as po ssible. 3) connect in, out a nd especia lly gnd respectively to a large copper area to cool the chip to improve thermal performance and long-term reliability.
